In my view, the events in the story can also occur in the world today. Raising a child during and after the Second World War was challenging because of the harsh economic conditions of the time. Even in the present times, the economic crisis being experienced affects the upbringing of children as parents are forced to leave them under the care of other people as they look for means to support their families. Lack of emotional and material support from family members can also lead to extreme struggle, causing similar events to re-occur.
